Hackathon 2012

Join entrepreneurship@UBC on Saturday, April 28th from 1pm to 7pm as they host Karacter Labs, a hot new company  fresh to Kelowna for a live Hackathon from 1 p.m to 7 p.m located  in EME building.

First Prize: The opportunity to become a technical Founder in with the company and up to a 30% equity stake in the company

For the second year in a row, your Engineering Undergraduate Society participated in CANstruction Kelowna. The event was hosted at Orchard Park Mall and raised both cans and funds to help out the Kelowna Community Food Bank.

This year we received an honourable mention for our structure, titled “Love Wins”. Thank you to all students who helped out with this event and Christmas Carolling this year, which raised the funds to buy our cans.

UBC Engineering Competition – Okanagan

The UBC Engineering Competition – Okanagan (UBCECO) will be hosted on November 26th in order to choose teams that we are sending to the Western Engineering Competition (WEC). This competition will include Junior Design, Senior Design, Impromptu Debate, Engineering Communications, Consulting Engineering, and Innovative Design.

Teams consist of 4 people for Junior Design, Senior Design, and Consulting Engineering. Innovative Design teams can be from 1-4 students, Impromptu Debate is for teams of 2, and Engineering Communications for 1 or 2 students.

The times for the individual competitions on November 26th will be determined after all of the teams are registered. The entire day will run from 9AM – 5PM.

Western Engineering Competition (WEC)

UBC Okanagan will be hosting a qualification competition for the Western Engineering Competition (WEC) in November, 2011 (exact date and time TBD). WEC  is a highly prestigious competition between engineering students from universities in Western Canada.  The top junior and senior teams will move on to participate in WEC, which will be held at the University of Calgary in late January, 2012.

The six different categories that students can compete in at WEC are listed here.

The application form for all teams is now available here. Sign up is now open, and will close on Tuesday, November 16th for all competitions. Be sure to get your application form in before then! If you have any questions, send an email to external@ubcoengineers.com.

APEG BC Industry Night – March 23rd 2011

APEGBC is working with UBC Okanagan Engineering Undergraduate Society and UBC Okanangan Earth & Environmental Sciences Course Union to host an Industry night on March 23, 2011. The APEGBC & UBC Okanagan Industry Night Seminar & Industry Reception focuses on providing engineering and geoscience students tips on Marketing Yourself to the Right Employers as well as an opportunity to start building their industry contacts.

The EUS is hosting a pub night to help send teams to the Western Engineering Competition this year. Each ticket costs $10 and includes a burger and a drink. There will also be door prizes, a few raffles (think Pilsner board game and other swag), and the potential for a beer pong tournament!

Tickets include:
Burger (choice of chicken, veggie or beef)
Drink (pint, glass of wine, high ball)
Entry to door prize raffle

Following the career fair the EUS is hosting a Mentoring Dinner, co-sponsored by APEG BC. There will be a Keynote address by Mr. Derek Doyle, CEO of APEG BC. This event provides students the opportunity to learn more about the real world challenges encountered in their respective industries. Note to Students:

Prior to the career fair, Career Services will be hosting resume building and networking workshops sponsored by Urban Systems Ltd and Aplin Martin Ltd. These events will be on January 6th and 11th respectively. Invitations to register for this event will be sent out at the beginning of second semester.

Engineering Christmas Carolling

Since 2007, the Engineering Undergraduate Society has been hosting an event on the last day of class of first semester called Christmas Carolling. Students meet up each year with a bunch of carols and wander around campus while spreading Christmas Cheer. You will be given a carol book so don’t worry if you don’t know the words to some songs!

This year we will be taking donations for the EUS Movember campaign while carolling. Come out on Friday, bring your “Holiday Cheer”, and have some fun before exams start.

Silky mEUStache Party

To celebrate the end of Movember, the EUS is working with Gotcha’sNightclub in Kelowna to host a party. Proceeds from each ticket sold will go towards the UBC Okanagan School of Engineering Movember team. Two grand prize giveaways will be given out in the night for best moustache.

APEG BC EIT/GIT Log Book Seminar

The APEG BC Okanagan Branch will be hosting an EIT/GIT log book seminar on November 4th on campus. This presentation includes an introduction to who APEG BC is, what the requirements are for registering as an EIT/GIT, who you can use as a reference, acceptable experience, and how to present this experience.
