Conferences & Competitions
Through out the year, many different conferences and competitions occur for engineers locally, nationally, and internationally. This section will hopefully have applications available for students to apply to attend these conference or competitions.
If you have any questions about any upcoming external events, contact Natasha Orlitzky at external@ubcoengineers.com.
WESST Retreat, October
WESST retreat serves as an annual general meeting and provides an opportunity for current and future leaders of WESST member societies to gather for workshops, open discussions and presentations on issues surrounding engineering student life. It brings together delegates from engineering schools in the Western region of Canada. Held at the same time, WESST Olympics are a purely social gathering of all the member engineering student societies and includes a fun competition between the societies. Its purpose is to promote and encourage the interaction of students on a regional level. It is also designed to bring out new students and to introduce them to activities outside their respective engineering societies. WESST Retreat 2010 was hosted by the University of Alberta Engineering Students’ Society, at Camp Wohelo on Pigeon Lake, AB.
CFES Congress, Jan
The CFES Congress is the annual general meeting of the Canadian Federation of Engineering Students. Each year, during the first week of January, the over 200 engineering students from over 45 engineering schools across Canada come together to participate in the conference. Each conference has a theme that is explored by guest speakers from various organizations (public, government, industry, education) in the form of lectures, round table discussions and panel discussions. As well, many workshops on student programs, current issues, CFES operations and other topics of interest are held throughout the week.
Western Engineering Competition (WEC), Jan
More information available here
The Western Engineering Competition is a regional competition that brings together innovative engineering students in the Western Region of the country, from Manitoba westwards. Competitors from engineering schools come together during the third week of January each year to compete in six different categories. The competition categories are meant to showcase the ingenuity and aptitude of engineering students beyond their curriculums.
Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC), March
Each year, the Canadian Engineering Compeition brings together 150 of the most innovative and creative engineering undergraduate students from across the nation to compete against each other in one of six categories. Each competition category at CEC challenges its participants to expand their frame of reference and to identify solutions to problems experienced by our profession. At the Western Engineering Competition (regional equivalent), competitors who place in the top first and second places in each competition category are invited to attend this prestigious national competition.
International Engineering Competition (IEC)
A collaborative event run by CFES, BEST, and bonding, the International Engineering Competition brings together the brightest engineering students from Canada and Europe to compete in one of Senior Design or Consulting Engineering categories. The top two teams from the Canadian Engineering Competition (national equivalent) are invited to attend this event, giving them the opportunity to take part in an once-in-a-lifetime experience in their undergraduate careers.
