Societal Donations
Through out the year, the Engineering Undergraduate Society (EUS) participates in a variety of events to ensure that engineers get involved in the community they will one day be working in.
Since the time the EUS started up in 2005, over $15 000 have been raised through various events for charity. The following are a few of the events the EUS holds for charitable reasons, as well as a few of the charities that the money has been donated to. For more in depth descriptions of these events, please refer to the Events page.
Movember
This year, the EUS is taking part in the international Movember campaign to help raise funds and awareness for Prostate Cancer Canada. Join our team or make a donation here and help us reach our goal of $3000.
Christmas Carolling
During the last week of classes in the Winter Semester, engineers on campus spread christmas cheer by singing christmas carols, or some geeky versions of them. The engineers go around campus signing, giving out candy canes, and accepting donations on behalf of the charity of choice for the year. In 2007, approximately $350 was made for the United Way Campaign on campus, and in 2008, about $400 was raised for a family through the SHARE Society’s Adopt a Family Fundraiser. In 2009, $350 was raised for the Kelowna Community Food Bank.
Pi Day
On Pi Day (March 14th) or close to it, if it occurs on a weekend, engineers organize a fundraiser on campus for the Kelowna Community Food Bank. During this event, engineers deliver pies that have been ordered the previous day to the intended recipient. These recipients are then given the option to take the pie in the face, pay to have it redirected, or pay to neutralize the pie. This event is always held in good fun, and has seen many new participants each year so far. In 2010, $450 was raised for the Kelowna Community Foodbank.
Hair for Care
With a silent auction, hair cutting, and pledge forms, engineers raised both awareness and funds for cancer research. All proceeds from this event were donated to Southern Okanagan Canacer Research.
Other Events
Each October, money is raised for the overall United Way campaign in coordination with the School of Engineering through barbecues.
Engineers also try to help out with events on campus held by other organizations.
For Project Grow, Residence Life on campus held a Penny Drive competition between the faculties on campus. For this Penny Drive, the Faculty of Engineering ended up with over one third (1/3) of the contributions to this fundraiser.
Along with monetary donations, lots of engineering students donate their time to organizations on campus, such as volunteering for Create.
